Nigel Parry/Lowertown.info—Weeks 4-6: March 27th-April 15th, 2020: Tracking the local impact of the COVID-19 virus in Lowertown, Saint Paul, MN. This series, tracking the impact of the coronavirus crisis on the 4×4 block square area of just one neighborhood in Saint Paul—Lowertown—was begun on March 6th, the date that Minnesota saw its first official positive test result for COVID-19. Since then, we’ve gone from one positive case to 1,809 positive cases and 87 deaths (April 15th statistics from the Minnesota Department of Health). At the end of week three of this series, the openings and closings of local hospitality industry businesses, and the news of event cancellations had mostly stabilized, so the series was paused. Today, April 15th, I went back through these last three weeks of social media postings by local businesses, and local news reports, to find developments worth adding to the documentary record below.

Artist Kirk Sklar sews facemasks at his Lowertown loft in St. Paul on Wednesday, April 8, 2020. Sklar felt he needed to do something to help out during the COVID-19 pandemic, so he pulled out his mother’s vintage sewing machine and began making facemasks. (John Autey/Pioneer Press)

Kirk Sklar is getting revenge against coronavirus. When the virus wiped out his business, he created another business to counterattack. Until last week, Sklar was a 49-year-old artist and maker of specialty dog leashes who lives and works in St. Paul’s Lowertown. But now he is founder of Ikervolk, a company which sells his home-made face masks. The masks carry unique designs such as flowers, images of the galaxy, bees and cartoons. In his first week, Sklar sold 150 of them at $10 apiece.
